NFL executive claims Rams made deal with Ty Simpson before draft
Rams may have promised Ty Simpson's agent they would draft him.
An NFL executive dropped a bomb when they were being interviewed by “The Athletic. ” They claim they heard that Ty Simpson’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, cut a deal with the LA Rams ahead of the draft, basically promising that if Simpson was still there at the No. 13 slot, the team would draft him.
“Drafting a quarterback without talking to him would be crazy — unbelievable,” said the executive. “I was told that (GM) Les (Snead) made a deal with (agent) Jimmy Sexton when the kid was coming out and promised him he’d get no lower than them. ” Simpson confirmed last week, after the draft, that he and the team had talked extensively beforehand.
Many NFL analysts not only didn’t think Simpson would go that high, but as low as the second round. In fact, there was no buzz with any team taking him in the first round, according to most NFL experts. No one had a clue what was going on behind the scenes.
Another executive said that head coach Sean McVay acted like he was upset to save face, not because he was upset with NFL MVP Matthew Stafford. “Sean runs the show there,” they said. “He is just using the GM to save face and look good for Matthew.
