Jamison Huizenga first Black River basketball player to join MIAA champs
The all-state guard will join the MIAA champs, looking to become the first Black River boys basketball player to suit up in college.
It was a big year for Black River's Jamison Huizenga. The senior became the first River Rat to earn all-state honors in basketball when he was named to the second team in Division 3 by the Michigan Sportswriters. That pioneer spirit continues as Huizenga will be the first Black River boys basketball player to play college basketball.
Huizenga recently committed to play for MIAA champion Olivet University. "It's cool to be the first basketball player from my school to play in college.
" Huizenga set the season scoring record at Black River. He averaged 18 points and five assists as a senior, scoring as many as a school-record 44 in a game. The 6-foot, 2-inch guard will be a strong addition to the Comets, who won the MIAA regular-season title last season.
He will be joining another local player, Conner Schipper, who was the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year as a junior center. "I chose Olivet because of coach (Sam) Hargraves, the chance to play against Hope and because of the local guys on their roster," Huizenga said. Huizenga hopes to lead Olivet to another MIAA title.
