Six in a row: Chelsea slump matches clubs worst Premier League streak Monday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest was the sixth in a row for Chelsea in the English top flight. The result matches the club’s worst losing streak in the Premier League era. With defeats against Newcastle United , Everton , Manchester City , Manchester United , Brighton & Hove Albion and now Forest, the Blues have matched the same number of consecutive losses they suffered in the 1993/94 campaign, only their second in the Premier League era.
Back then, the London side lost to West Ham United , Norwich City, Aston Villa, Oldham Athletic, Leeds United and Arsenal . Under Glenn Hoddle, the team finished 14th that season. Before the rebranding that saw the English top flight become known as the Premier League, Chelsea had already endured an even worse run.
That came in Division One in 1952/53, when they lost seven straight games against Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City, Newcastle United, West Bromwich Albion, Middlesbrough, Manchester City and Manchester United. That campaign ended with a 19th-place finish, ahead of only Manchester City, Stoke City and Derby County. Ironically, with the same manager, Ted Drake, and much of that squad, Chelsea would go on to win their first English league title in 1954/55.
In the current campaign, the London club sit ninth with 48 points. Following today’s defeat, they can no longer qualify for next season’s Champions League.
