Shot clock coming to NJ high school basketball after surprising vote
At the NJSIAA full membership meeting May 4, a ballot measures to introduce shot clocks for basketball beginning in the 2027-28 season passed narrowly
EDISON − New Jersey, start installing shot clocks. At the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association full membership meeting May 4, a ballot measures to introduce shot clocks for high school basketball beginning in the 2027-28 season passed by a 170-166 count. Thirty-two states have adopted a 35-second shot clock for high school basketball, and New Jersey will now be joining them.
A similar ballot measure to add a shot clock for high school lacrosse failed to pass. The lacrosse proposal had 166 no votes to 149 yes votes with 21 abstentions. Ballots to allow for tri-ops (three schools feeding into one team) in the nascent sport of girls wrestling and for the full sanctioning of girls flag football starting in spring of 2027 each passed by a wide margin.
To pass, each needed a majority vote of the attendees. Check back soon for more. This article originally appeared on NorthJersey.
