May 4 (UPI) -- A 22-year-old Virginia athlete was able to perform 12,412 pull-ups in 24 hours in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record. Xavier Dillard started his attempt at the record for the most pull-ups in 24 hours at 10 a. m.

Saturday and completed his marathon exercise session at the same time on Sunday. The current record, set by Mexican Enrique Zapata in January, stands at 12,345 pull-ups, a number Dillard surpassed by 67. Dillard said he started really pushing himself in pull-ups three years ago in an attempt to surpass the abilities of a friend, and he started training for the world record two years ago.

Evidence from the attempt must now be reviewed by Guinness World Records to become official.
