Sabrina Ionescu injury update: New York Liberty guard to have MRI on ankle
Sabrina Ionescu landed awkwardly, rolling the left ankle, in a preseason contest against the Connecticut Sun. She will have an MRI on Monday.
UNCASVILLE, CT — New York Liberty point Sabrina Ionescu will have an MRI Monday after injuring her left ankle Sunday, May 3 in their WNBA preseason finale – a 79-67 victory over the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena. Ionescu drove in for a layup around the 7:40 mark of the third quarter and landed awkwardly, rolling the left ankle. Her feet appeared to get tangled with the Sun's Diamond Miller .
Ionescu was seen with a boot on her left leg after the game. "[Things are] positive right now," first-year Liberty coach Chris DeMarco said postgame. "We're just going to do the test tomorrow and that's the only update I have.
" Ionescu hurt the same ankle her rookie year and ended up having season-ending surgery. She did not play in Unrivaled, the 3-on-3 professional league, this offseason due to an injury sustained during the 2025 WNBA season. "Obviously, it wasn't good to see," Liberty center Jonquel Jones said.
".. . Our fingers are crossed and we'll just kind of handle it as we get more information.
