German Chancellor Friedrich Merz believes the Germany national team has what it takes to go far at World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada in June and July. "The German team is in such good shape right now and has developed so well that it has a chance to reach the later rounds, the semi-finals, and if things go really well, it could even make it to the final," he told Caren Miosga on Sunday in her TV show on broadcaster ARD. "If Germany make it to the final, I'll be there, of course," he added.

Merz, who's a declared fan of Borussia Dortmund, congratulated regional rivals Schalke for securing their promotion to the Bundesliga with a 1-0 win against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Saturday. "I'm looking forward to finally having the Ruhr derby again. That's wonderful.

Congratulations to Schalke," he said. He also condemned the hateful comments that Union Berlin coach Marie-Louise Eta has been receiving on social media since she got the job. Eta is the first woman to coach a men's football team in one of Europe's top leagues.

He said that the attacks are "unbearable, and it insults the sport of football. "I think itโ€™s great that she's doing this. I truly wish her every success.
