Promoted side Thun have won the Swiss championship in sensational fashion with three matches remaining in the season. Mauro Lustrinelli's side sealed their first major trophy when closest challengers St Gallen lost 3-0 against Sion. Thun had squandered the chance to wrap up the Super League championship early in a 3-1 defeat at dethroned title holders Basel on Saturday.
Thun's players and fans celebrated the title in their own stadium, where St Gallen's match against Sion was shown on big screens. The club from the town of 45,000 inhabitants in the canton of Bern had spent five years in the second tier before promotion in 2025. As Swiss champions, Thun will enter the Champions League second qualifying round.
Thun already entered Champions League qualifying in the 2005-06 season as Swiss runners-up and reached the group stage.
