Liverpool have reportedly stepped up their chase of the English midfielder.

(Photo by Sebastian Frej/Getty Images) | Getty Images This year’s uneven campaign and, more importantly, the impending departures of iconic Liverpool players Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah means that the Reds will need to spend some time looking at transfers to re-stock the club and make more advances in building a side that better reflects the varied skill set required to operate in Arne Slot’s preferred system. It’s always a tricky thing to try to balance all of the competing interests to land the perfect player.

I imagine it must feel at times like trying to find a very specific grain of hay in a haystack. Beyond finding separate left-back and right-sided attack pieces of hay, Liverpool need to add at least one more player to a midfield that went from being a source of strength last season, to one that spent most of the year doing just enough to get by. Enter the freshest rumor slung by the rumor mongers at the Metro, which actually came to them via Marca: Liverpool are in “advanced talks” to acquire Crystal Palace and England midfielder, Adam Wharton for a fee of £80 million.

Now, even if the ties make sense in that Liverpool could use another midfielder, his age fits the profile that Liverpool generally like, and his nationality is a plus given the departures of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harvey Elliott, that price tag still feels quite high given the depth Liverpool need to address across different departments. Which is to say that price tag feels quite hefty given Liverpool will need to purchase a few players to provide requisite depth in quality and position. The most diabolical piece of this report, though, is that it’s a rumor that comes to us from Spain and then back through the Metro.

Which is to say: I’m extra dubious that there’s any merit to this report. That being said, I think most Liverpool fans would appreciate a signing of this caliber. Here’s hoping that they might be able to figure it out.
