UH softball team extends win streak to 8

The Hawaii softball team relied on the pitching of Taryn Irimata and Maryn Macneil and the power hitting of Jamie McGaughey and Millie Fidge to sweep a doubleheader against UC Riverside on Friday in Riverside, Calif. In the first game, Irimata pitched a six-hitter with no walks and six strikeouts in Hawaii’s 5-1 victory. McGaughey, Fidge and Milan Ah Yat homered for the Rainbow Wahine.

In the second game, Macneil tossed a five-hitter with one walk and no strikeouts in Hawaii’s 6-1 win. McGaughey batted 4-for-4 with a double, two homers, three runs and three RBIs, and Fidge belted a two-run homer for the Rainbow Wahine, who have won eight in a row. Hawaii (28-18, 20-6 Big West) will conclude the regular season against UC Riverside (6-37, 4-22) today at 9 a.

m. The Rainbow Wahine will be the No. 2 seed and receive a first-round bye at the Big West Championship, which starts Wednesday in Fullerton, Calif.

Lawrenz, Stedile earn another AVCA honor Hawaii beach volleyball players Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile were recipients of the AVCA Top Flight Award on Friday. Lawrenz and Stedile, both of Curitiba, Brazil, went 21-7 at the top flight. The honor is for teams across all flights, with the duos required to compete in at least 15 matches and win 75% of their matches at that flight.

Lawrenz and Stedile played three matches at other flights, and were the only UH pair to appear in every match together. On Thursday, they received AVCA All-America second- team honors.
