Old friend visits Orlando Storm as Dorian Thompson-Robinson returns
The Orlando Storm will see a very familiar face across the line of scrimmage Sunday afternoon when the Birmingham Stallions ascend on Inter&Co Stadium for a 4 p. m. , showdown.
The Storm are 4-1 and tied atop the UFL with the DC Defenders. Just two weeks ago, quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was wearing a Storm uniform, taking second-team reps as behind starter Jack Plummer. The quarterback battle between the two was “neck-and-neck” as Storm coach Anthony Becht referred during the short training camp.
Becht said either player could have been the starter, but Plummer won the job and then proceeded to go out and complete 70 percent of his passes in the first four games as the Storm rolled out to a 4-0 start, solidifying himself as the Storm quarterback. Becht felt bad watching Thompson-Robinson languish on the sidelines, so he put DTR in a situation that would benefit him, trading him to Birmingham for defensive tackle Amani Bledsoe and quarterback Matt Corral. “First of all, I think DTR is a starting quarterback in this league.
He is a phenomenal talent,” Becht said following the trade. “I just feel like I owe it to DTR to allow him to go play. ” DTR played well in his only game with Birmingham last week.
He did throw two interceptions in a 45-28 loss to the DC Defenders, but he also racked up 313 yards in the air, threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another. He was 28-of-43 passing (64%) and led Birmingham in rushing with 43 yards on 4 carries. It will be an interesting matchup, given that DTR is quite familiar with the Storm offense and the Orlando personnel, although Becht did say he would have some new wrinkles to combat any knowledge DTR may have passed along to Stallions’ coaches.
