There was still work to do, but a win on Saturday against Middlesborough would've kept their hopes alive of moving up to the English Premier League. Instead, Wrexham could only manage a 2-2 draw. That meant that Wrexham finished the season with 71 points, which was good for seventh place in the EFL Championship, the second-tier of English football.

Sixth-place Hull City finished on 73 points, but Wrexham would've held the tiebreaker on goal differential if they had earned the two additional points a win would've provided on Saturday. In the Championship, the first- and second-place finishers earn automatic promotion. The third- through sixth-place finishers compete in a four-team playoff to determine who the third promoted team is to the Premier League.

If Wrexham had won on Saturday, they would've had to earn two more victories this season to move up the ladder to the Premier League.
