What are lead ponies who walk with 2026 Kentucky Derby contenders?
The Thoroughbreds vying for the Kentucky Derby crown aren't the only horses you'll see on Saturday. Here's what the lead ponies are for.
There will be more than a few horses present at the 2026 Kentucky Derby on Saturday, but not all of them will be competing in the race. In addition to the Thoroughbreds participating in the 152nd running of the Derby, fans may also spot other horses that are not set to run, which are called lead ponies. "Lead ponies" is a bit of a misnomer, as most are not ponies at all but are in fact full-sized horses, often thoroughbreds and former race horses, themselves.
They're used to escort a jockey and a racehorse to and from the track, especially during warmups and the post-race parade, as they can help calm the racehorses. Because lead ponies are prized for their calmness, they are often geldings. If you've watched the Kentucky Derby — or any other horse race for that matter — you've likely seen lead ponies.
Now, when you see non-racing horses accompanying those vying for the prestigious Derby crown, you'll know their purpose. This article originally appeared on For The Win: What are the lead ponies that escort Kentucky Derby horses?
