Southern Lee baseball takes conference crown
The Southern Lee High School baseball team won the Carolina Pines Conference tournament on Thursday with a 12-6 win over Triton High. This was the first conference tournament win for Southern Lee with Tommy Harrington as head coach, according to SLHS Booster Club volunteer Kathy Taylor. SLHS also won the conference regular season championship.
Sophomore Ben Harrington got the win, and junior Bailey Berg picked up a save. Brady Wilson took the loss for the Hawks. Triton scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but didn’t score again until they added two more in the sixth inning.
Triton was hurt defensively by multiple errors. The Cavaliers scored three in the first and added two runs in both the second and third innings before adding five in the fifth frame. Max Andrew Sercy, a junior, and Harrington led the way offensively for Southern Lee with two hits and two RBI each, while junior Drew Patton had a hit and two RBI.
Sophomore Sam Taylor had two hits. Austin Wise led the way for the Hawks with three hits and two RBI, while Alan Hinson contributed with two RBI and Tyson Stephens had two hits. Southern Lee’s only losses on the year came to Overhills, Triton and Grays Creek, according to MaxPreps.
Other conference foes included: Lee County, Harnett Central, South Johnston, Union Pines, West Johnston and Western Harnett. The state tournament begins next week.
