Guardians Promote Rookie Outfielder in New Roster Move

The Cleveland Guardians made an intriguing move on their off day on Thursday, optioning George Valera to Triple-A. Cleveland deciding to option the struggling outfielder to the Minors wasn’t too surprising, but the mystery in this decision was that there wasn’t a corresponding move at the time, inducing speculation on what it could be. The Guardians answered those questions on Friday ahead of their series opener against the Athletics.

Cleveland recalled outfielder Petey Halpin from Triple-A Columbus, setting him up to make his 2026 season debut. This promotion will mark Halpin's second stint at the big-league level. His first taste of big-league action came at the end of last year.

The Guardians called Halpin up for his MLB debut last September and recorded two hits in six at-bats. At the time, Halpin was primarily used as a late-game substitution as a pinch runner or as a defensive replacement in the outfield for the Guardians, which have always been two of the 23-year-old’s primary strengths.
