Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images Detroit has been a rising sports city during the 2020s. The Detroit Lions were close to making the 2023 Super Bowl and had one of the best teams during the 2024-25 NFL season. Meanwhile, the Detroit Pistons had the best record in the Eastern Conference during the 2025-26 NBA season.
Now, the city could be landing All-Star Games. The Pistons and Red Wings are having ongoing conversations about a future NBA and NHL All-Star Game in Detroit, Michigan, as reported by Detroit Sports Commission executive director Marty Dobek to Jeremy Otto . The city hasn’t hosted an All-Star Game since MLB came to Comerica Park in 2005.
Meanwhile, the last time Detroit hosted an NBA All-Star Game was 1979 at the Pontiac Silverdome. Finally, the last NHL All-Star Game hosted in Detroit was on February 5, 1980, at the Joe Louis Arena. Needless to say, the city hasn’t been a very popular destination for All-Star Games during the 21st century.
The Pistons are looking to host the NBA All-Star Game in either 2029 or 2030 , which would celebrate the “Bad Boys” era of basketball. Little Caesars Arena would love to host an All-Star Game, but it has to make sense for the NBA or NHL. The Red Wings may have more difficulty, as the NHL All-Star Game isn’t an annual event at this point.
