In the days since then, there have been lots of rumors , leaks and speculation regarding where, when, how and why the Red Sox reached such a monumental decision. On Friday, Boston fans finally got the full picture from team insiders Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam. In a lengthy article for MassLive , Cotillo and McAdam reported that team leadership discussed and ultimately made their decision to fire Cora on Friday, following the team's ugly three-game sweep by the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.

After reaching their decision by the end of the day, Craig Breslow, Sam Kennedy and John Henry flew down to Baltimore on Saturday to deliver the news to Cora and several of his assistants at the team hotel after that day's game against the Orioles, which turned out to be the team's biggest win of the season . The decision did not come easily, but leadership felt it was necessary to give the team a spark and turn the season around. The report added that it was not due to a "bad relationship" between Cora and Breslow, as some have speculated.
