Report: Flick agrees one-year Barça extension and option for 2028-29
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick gestures on the touchline during the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal soccer match between FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund at Olympic Lluis Companys Stadium. Federico Gambarini/dpa Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has agreed to a one-year contract extension until the end of June 2028 plus an option for the 2028-29 season, Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported on Friday. The report said only a few details still had to be clarified next week when the German's agent Pini Zahavi is expected in Barcelona.
The newspaper cited sources from the coach's entourage. Flick is to sign the new contract once he and his team have wrapped up the La Liga title again. That could happen as early as this weekend.
Barcelona play at Osasuna on Saturday and a victory could increase the pressure on Real Madrid. If Los Blanco do not win at Espanyol on Sunday, the Catalans' title defence would be sealed. Otherwise, the decision could come a week later at the Clásico against Real at the Camp Nou.
Ahead of the 34th matchday of 38, Barcelona top the table with an 11-point lead over their arch-rivals. Former Bayern Munich and Germany boss Flick has coached Barcelona since July 2024. They were knocked out in the quarter-finals of this season's Champions League by Atlético Madrid and his desire to win the big prize is a factor in the extension.
Flick, 61, also wants to play with the team at the iconic Camp Nou once the football temple has been completely renovated. A report by broadcaster Cadena Ser said installation of the roof is now not due to begin until after the 2026-27 season. The report said the club have therefore asked the city council for permission to use the Olympic Stadium again for most of the 2027-28 season.
