AUGUSTA, GA (WJBF)- The GHSA golf state championships are officially set for May 18 and 19. While many teams in the CSRA have qualified for state, there are also individual qualifiers. At Pointe South Golf Club… you’ll find Laney high school golfer Gavin Wood practicing every single day.

“I try to be as patient at possible, with practice, not trying to work overly a lot, quality over quantity,” Wood said. That hard work and patience led him to qualify for his first ever state championship. “Going into the regional, his thing that he told me was that he played his best golf today.

If this doesn’t get me to state, I don’t know what will,” said Gavin’s mother Taneshia. He’s representing his school as the only member of the golf team. “I love the exposure, but it’s nice to have a team if I could, but it’s pretty cool actually.

I’ve always been the only child, so I haven’t been able to rely on other people that well. ” Wood picked up the sport when he was 10 years old during COVID. Then, his mother enrolled him in First Tee Augusta, where he spent the past five years honing his skills.

“He took a lead, and took off, he was their club champion two years in a row, he was mentoring other kids and showing them how to strengthen their game. ” First Tee along with the coaches around him have been key mentors. “Course strategy is getting around the course, hitting right the clubs, making the right decisions, and being smart,” Wood said.
