🥍GAME OF THE DAY If defense wins championships, then what the East Greenwich boys lacrosse team did in the second half Thursday shows it’s more than prepared to win one this spring. Last spring Portsmouth beat the Avengers with an offensive onslaught in the Division II title game. This year’s rematch – the first since the meeting at Brown University – was all about defense and on Thursday, EG was better.
Trailing by two at the half, the Avengers held the Patriots scoreless over the final two quarters and pulled out the 6-5 win. East Greenwich came into the game undefeated and left that way thanks to a stellar effort from its defensive unit and goalie Brendan Darcey , who was spectacular when it mattered most. Fter three saves in the first half, the senior netminder was unconscious in the second half and made eight saves to keep Portsmouth off the board.
It was quite the second half for the Avengers. Thanks in part to two goals from Rafferty Dionne , the Patriots held a 5-3 halftime advantage. East Greenwich tied the game in the third quarter after scores from Wyatt Gelzhiser and Micah Dawson .
