Who is the best girls basketball player in the storied history of the First Coast? The debate is on. As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary this summer, USA TODAY Sports will celebrate the 250 greatest American sports figures of all time.

To accompany the national honors, the USA TODAY Network is also recognizing the athletes and sports figures who shaped communities and defined their states, including right here in Northeast Florida. These girls basketball honors will form part of a series, selected by a statewide panel of USA TODAY Network experts, to roll out through 2026. This time, the USA TODAY Network is honoring the Jacksonville area's girls basketball stars.

Here are our selections for 10 girls hoops players who defined basketball in Northeast Florida. These 10 players, listed in alphabetical order, all excelled at the high school level and progressed to further accomplishments. More: The best all-time football players from Florida: VOTE: Northeast Florida's all-time best player in girls basketball Monique Cardenas, Keystone Heights At Keystone Heights, Cardenas scored 2,805 points between 1994 and 1998, the highest total officially recorded thus far for an Florida High School Athletic Association-affiliated school.

Her achievements helped Keystone to three FHSAA championships. She went on to excel at Florida, and in 2002, she became Northeast Florida's first WNBA Draft selection when the Portland Fire selected her in the fourth round. Rennia Davis, Ribault A triple state champion with the Trojans dynasty of the mid-2010s, Davis has almost everything on her basketball resume: Two All-First Coast player of the year awards, a Miss Basketball award, McDonald's All-American, a national tournament championship at Madison Square Garden and impressive career stats (2,304 points, 1,043 rebounds).
