Here's why the Bengals declined to pick up Myles Murphy's fifth-year option.
The Cincinnati Bengals decided not to exercise defensive end Myles Murphy’s fifth-year option, a source told The Enquirer on April 30. Cincinnati is still hoping to reach a long-term deal with Murphy, though. Murphy, the Bengals ’ first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, would be scheduled to make $14.
5 million in 2027 if the team picked up his fifth-year option. The NFL’s deadline to pick up the fifth-year option is May 1. Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin was asked about Murphy’s future and whether or not the team plans to ensure he’s on the roster in 2027.
“Now that the draft is up, we will see what kind of cost we can layer in here and what we can and can’t do there,” Tobin said on April 27. “It will be a financial decision primarily one way or the other. He’s a guy we are counting on not only this year, we would like a long-term relationship with him.
I don’t know whether that comes together. ” The amount is determined by the player’s performance, usage and position. There are four tiers, and Murphy falls into Tier 4.
