Shedeur Sanders' starting hopes dealt tough blow after recent report

Yahoo Sports

A report suggests Deshaun Watson has the upper hand for the Browns' starting job, but comments from Cleveland GM Andrew Berry suggest otherwise.

Shedeur Sanders seemed to be trending toward becoming the Cleveland Browns ' starting quarterback entering the 2026 season, but after just a few minicamp practices, that now appears in jeopardy. Cleveland. com beat writer Mary Kay Cabot reported Wednesday that veteran quarterback Deshaun Watson emerged from the string of practices with an "inside track" to be named the Browns QB1.

Considering Watson's exorbitant contract, the Browns would be wise to see what they have left in the 30-year-old Watson before turning to Sanders. Still, the report from Cabot seems very premature, and the former Colorado Buffaloes star still has ample time to grasp Todd Monken's offense and surpass an injury-plagued Watson. Cleveland has only completed a voluntary minicamp, and Browns general manager Andrew Berry believes the team is not close to naming a starter, even going so far as to say that Watson's experience does not give him an advantage over Sanders.

Based on Berry's comments, the report is overblowing the situation. Watson likely held the inside track all along, given his contract and veteran status, but that is not stopping Sanders from winning the job. Sanders will be given the chance to compete and win the starting job, and until we see more definite signs pointing in another direction, that is how fans should view the Browns quarterback competition.
