Matt Fitzpatrick overtakes Scottie Scheffler for FedEx Cup points lead
Who’s leading the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup heading into a crucial stretch of tournaments?
Matt Fitzpatrick enters three weeks of huge tournaments with the PGA Tour’s lead on the FedEx Cup points race. Fitzpatrick picked up 400 points last week for combining with his brother Alex to win the Zurich Classic at the TPC Louisiana and slipped past Scottie Scheffler for the FedEx Cup lead. Fitzpatrick entered the week 37 points behind Scheffler, who did not play in the Zurich Classic, and now has a lead of 363 points.
Fitzpatrick, who has won three times and finished second in The Players in his last five starts, needs to keep playing hard to fend off Scheffler and a batch of other contenders. The Tour plays at two iconic golf courses in signature events for the next two weeks, the Cadillac Championship at the Doral Blue Monster April 30-May 3 and the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte May 7-10. Both of those award 700 FedEx Cup points to the winner.
Then comes the PGA Championship May 14-17 at the Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia, with 750 points to the winner. That means 2,150 points will go to the champions. Fitzpatrick has opted not to play at Doral.
There is no cut this week so players such as Scheffler and No. 3 Collin Morikawa (675 points back) can regain the FedEx points lead they held at different times this season with a victory. But other players can position themselves well for the next three weeks with a good showing at the Blue Monster.
