Sayon Keita will play a huge factor in UNC's 2026-27 basketball success. The international big man is a rising star in his recruiting rankings.

The North Carolina Tar Heels gained a much-needed reinforcement for their frontcourt on Tuesday afternoon, landing 7-foot international center Sayon Keita . There's no telling Michael Malone's current plans for the Malian, FC Barcelona big man , but one has to imagine Keita plays sizable minutes during his first year at UNC. If Tar Heel Nation needed another reason to be excited about Keita's impending arrival, here's one.

According to Keita's 247Sports recruiting profile , Keita is now a 5-star. If international players earned inclusion in the 247Sports' Top 150, Keita would be the 2026 recruiting class' top-ranked center, according to Grant Hughes. North Carolina re-shaped a sizable portion of its frontcourt this offseason, replacing last year's starters in Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar.

Many hoped for Veesaar's return, but with rising draft stock and a pro-real game, Veesaar declared for the NBA Draft. Keita is projected to be a lottery pick in the 2027 NBA Draft, so Malone's ability to land him will prove wonders for future roster construction. UNC can still add uncommitted players, whether via the transfer portal or high school recruiting, so maybe Keita's commitment will spur additional pledges.

On the Tar Heels' 2026-27 roster, Keita likely battles with Florida Atlantic transfer Maxim Logue for minutes. Logue has the advantage of playing collegiate basketball, with 49 appearances between Oregon State and Florida Atlantic. Keita has pro experience, which any current collegiate program craves, particularly with NIL money making the college game increasingly professionalized.
