Cora was not the only manager fired in the last week. Rob Thomson was also relieved of his duties as the Philadelphia Phillies manager. Martínez felt that both were victims of setting the bar so high early in their tenures.
"Alex Cora and Rob Thomson are both victims of their success," Martínez wrote on X . "They did so well and both organizations gave so much to them to handle, that when things stopped clicking, they were the ones to blame. " Cora won the World Series in his first season with the Red Sox.
Thomson took over as the Phillies manager in 2022 after Joe Girardi. As the interim manager, he led the Phillies to the World Series but fell just short. He ended up taking over as the long-term manager and had the Phillies in contention every year.
