Kernel girls golf takes second place at Pierre Invite
Apr. 28—PIERRE — The Mitchell High School girls golf team claimed a second-place finish out of eight teams on Tuesday at the Pierre Invitational at Hillsview Golf Club. MHS shot a team score of 331 strokes, placing the Kernels behind only Aberdeen Central (301).
Watertown (347), Rapid City Stevens (366) and host Pierre (371) rounded out the top-five teams, respectively. Maddie Childs was the Kernels' top performer, shooting a 7-over-par 78 on the par 71 layout and finishing in a tie for fourth with Watertown's Gabi Olson in the 50-golfer field. Mia Larson gave MHS a second top-10 individual, as she was ninth after shooting an 82.
Londyn Hajek (84, tie-12th) and Anna Eliason (87, 15th) rounded out the Kernels' team score, while Elliot Smith (91, tie-20th) and Presley Meyerink (98, tie-30th) were also on the course for MHS. Behind the top three individual finishers, Aberdeen Central ran away with the team title. Olivia Braun shot a 1-under-par 70 to earn individual medalist honors, followed by Emma Dohrer (73) and Kylie Wirebaugh (75).
Overall, the Golden Eagles' team total of 301 strokes was just 17-over-par between their top four golfers. Winner, the only non-Class AA team in attendance, finished seventh as a team. Gracie Root paced the Warriors by shooting an 81, which put her in a tie for seventh place individually.
Mitchell visits Aberdeen for the Hub City Invitational on Thursday.
