What exercising Christian Gonzalez fifth-year option means for the Patriots

The deal, which seems more a formality than anything else, ensures that Gonzalez remains signed with the Patriots until after the 2027 season.

What else does it mean for the team, though? Let’s assess Buying some time Gonzalez is a top three cornerback in the NFL right now, and as such a realistic candidate to reset the market at the position at some point in the future. And while both he and the Patriots had been working toward that happening, no agreement was set to materialize before the option deadline on May 1.

Exercising said option was therefore the only feasible course of action, but one that does give the two parties some wiggle room in their negotiations. The specter of free agency has been pushed back another year, meaning that there are now 22 months to come up with a deal. That deal happening sooner rather than later is in everybody’s best interest; Gonzalez wants long-term security while the team wants to stay ahead of the curve on cornerback extensions.

At the moment, Trent McDuffie’s $31 million per year is the top of the market, and Gonzalez is likely to exceed that number. The question is when not if, but the window for that “when” has just widened.
