Florentino Pérez wants Mourinho as Real Madrid coach -report
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez wants José Mourinho’s return to the Spanish capital, according to a report from The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Mario Cortegana. Mourinho is currently coaching Benfica but has a €3 million clause on his contract, one which Pérez would like to trigger, per that same report. The president will have the final decision on who Real Madrid hire during this process, according to other reports.
Current coach Álvaro Arbeloa is set to leave the club after an unsuccessful second half of the season. CEO José Ángel Sánchez made the decision to appoint Xabi Alonso a year ago, but Pérez regrets that call and will be the driving force this time around. Other candidates for the coaching position are Didier Deschamps and Mauricio Pochettino, as other voices inside Real Madrid’s board are opposed to Mourinho’s return to the club, per that same report by Cortegana and Ornstein.
