Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko were enough to see out the three points, as a wasteful Brentford squandered a host of quality chances until Mathias Damsgaard struck three minutes from full-time. It was too little too late for Brentford by that point, as Igor Thiago's chase for the Premier League Golden Boot was pegged back after he missed a number of big opportunities to score. United were once again lifted by an assist from Bruno Fernandes, whose feed to Sesko to put the Red Devils two-goals up before halftime brought him to 19 on the campaign, one off the Premier League single-season record.
It also made him the first United player since Robin van Persie in 2012/13 to register an assist in seven straight Premier League games. The victory gave United sole possession of third place in the league table, three clear of Liverpool and Aston Villa behind them, while moving 11 points above sixth-place Brighton in the first position outside the Champions League qualifying spots. Brentford's hunt for European football took a hit with the defeat, seeing them remain in ninth with 48 points, level with Chelsea above them and Fulham behind them.
