Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby seeks treatment for gambling addiction
Amid an NCAA investigation into "thousands" of bets placed, the projected starting quarterback for the Red Raiders is entering a treatment facility.
Texas Tech transfer quarterback addition Brendan Sorsby is taking a medical leave of absence from the football program, the school announced on Monday. Sorsby will enter a residential treatment center for gambling addiction. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, the decision came amid an NCAA investigation into Sorsby allegedly placing "thousands" of online bets, including on Indiana games when he was a member of the Hoosiers' football program in 2022.
Per Thamel, Sorsby's IU bets were all on his team to win, and none of them were placed on games in which he played. The betting activity is reportedly not being looked into by law enforcement, but NCAA rules forbid athletes from betting on any sports, professional or college. Here is Texas Tech's full statement on Sorsby's leave of absence.
The Texas Tech Athletics Department and Brendan Sorsby announced today that Sorsby will take an immediate indefinite leave of absence from the football program to enter a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction. Texas Tech is committed to supporting Brendan through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being. โWe love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,โ Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said.
