District 3 baseball: Wilson trying to lock down first-round bye in 6A
As the Berks high school baseball season heads to May, Wilson has stamped itself as the team to beat for the county championship and as a top contender for the District 3 Class 6A crown. The Bulldogs are 13-3 overall and 9-0 in Division 1 play in the BCIAA. They are ranked second in the district power rankings with Chambersburg (12-2) holding the top spot.
The tourney field is 14 teams with the top two earning first round byes, which is critical when it comes to juggling the pitching staff. Wilson may or may not be the only BCIAA team in the 6A field because Muhlenberg is on the bubble. The Muhls (7-7) are ranked 14th heading into Monday’s games, the last spot in the tourney.
The Muhls play at Conrad Weiser today and are at Exeter on Wednesday. They finish this week against Division 1 leader Wilson and then have a non-league game with Warwick next Tuesday. Defending district champion Gov.
Mifflin (7-10) in all likelihood will not make the tourney. Class 5A Exeter is in good position to make the 14-team field as the Eagles (12-4) are ranked seventh with four games remaining, including at least two games they will be favored in – Reading High and McCaskey. While the Eagles are readying for the postseason, two 5A Berks teams still have work to do to make the district tournament.
Twin Valley (8-7) is ranked 13th and Daniel Boone (7-8) is ranked 14th. The two teams play today which could flip their order if Boone wins. The two are also tied for first in Division 2 of the BCIAA with 5-4 records.
