The Boston Red Sox decided to fire Alex Cora on Saturday, and plenty of teams could show interest in signing him in the next hiring cycle. Among the teams looking for a new manager could be the New York Mets. Currently managed by Carlos Mendoza, the Mets are 9-19 to start the year.

Mendoza helped get the Mets to the National League Championship Series in his first season, but missed the postseason last year. Even the 2024 team that reached the NLCS went on an improbable run after barely getting into the postseason. The Mets have invested a lot in the players on their team and need to see better results.

They signed Bo Bichette in the offseason and also traded for Freddy Peralta and Luis Robert Jr. Not to mention, they have over $700 million committed to Juan Soto. It's starting to look like Mendoza is not the man for the job, but Cora might be.

Cora is not perfect, but he has won a World Series and has 621 wins as a big league manager. The Mets have an ultra-aggressive approach to player acquisition, and Cora could thrive with a roster and front office like that. If the Mets do fire Mendoza, the job will quickly become one of the most coveted in the league.
