Raiders just landed top prospect at his position as undrafted free agent
When you have the shot to get the top prospect at a position of need, as an undrafted free agent you do it. That's what the Raiders just did.
Immediately after the NFL Draft concluded on Saturday, teams began furiously scooping up players who slipped out of the draft. It becomes a mad dash to get what is basically found money -- those players who are valuable, but who the team didn't need to spend draft capital to acquire. And of all the positions who saw players selected, only one did not -- long snapper.
The Raiders moved quickly and signed Penn State long snapper Tyler Duzanski who is the top rated long snapper among this year's draft prospects and one of just two on whom Brugler had with a draftable grade. Far be it from me to know all the finer points of how they go about rating the quality of long snappers, but I'd assume it has something to do with consistency in snapping, blocking, and ability to get downfield and make tackles in the return game. Duzanski is a fourth-year senior who has been the full time long snapper for the Nittany Lions the past three years.
The Raiders didn't bring back last year's long snapper Jacob Bobenmoyer and added LS Alex Ward back in January on a reserve/future contract . Ward had been released by the LA Rams last November after three years with the club. It's clear the long snapper job is open in Las Vegas, which would be why they went after Duzanski as a priority UDFA and why he would sign on figuring he had a pretty good shot of landing the job in Las Vegas.
