The Boston Red Sox are going in a different direction after a 10-17 start to the regular season, firing manager Alex Cora along with multiple other coaches on Saturday.
Boston has not lived up to expectations following a busy offseason filled with multiple big acquisitions, but parting ways with Cora still came as a surprise. The decorated manager led the Red Sox to a World Series win in 2018 and managed the team for seven seasons across two stints. While speaking to reporters, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow emphasized his belief in the team's roster despite their early struggles, which played a role in Boston's decision to part ways with Cora.
"First, I just want to echo (Sam Kennedy's) sentiments about Alex, what he's meant to this organization and the staff and thank them for all of their contributions," Breslow said in a video posted to X by Tyler Milliken. "But, answering your question directly, it really comes down to the belief we have in the players and the belief that we have in the group to accomplish what we set out to accomplish. "By acting today, it gives us 135 games ahead of us.
We have almost a full season's worth of run to take advantage of this fresh start and ultimately compete for a division and a deep postseason run in the way we talked about it and envisioned and believed heading into Spring Training. " Though the Red Sox have struggled this season, they still have a roster filled with plenty of talent. Worcester Red Sox manager Chad Tracy will serve as the team's interim manager for the time being as Boston looks to turn things around and string together some wins.
