Spring high school football practice begins in Brevard County
Brevard County fields 18 high school football teams, 16 varsity programs and two eight-man programs.
Are spring football jamborees becoming a thing of the past in Brevard County? With spring football practice beginning Monday, April 27, for most schools across the state, only 9 of Brevard County's 18 programs will be taking part in spring jamboree games against another school. Teams can have up to 20 practices during the spring.
Brevard County has 16 varsity programs and two eight-man programs. Seven schools have intrasquad games planned, while three schools said they have no spring games or jamborees planned. Astronaut is having both an instraquad game in early May and a jamboree game later in the month.
Two teams have new coaches prowling the sidelines. Three-time state champion coach Ryan Schneider departed from Cocoa to take the Melbourne Central Catholic job. MCC's previous coach, Willie Tillman, has become the school's athletic director.
Schneider was replaced at Cocoa by Nate Hooks, an alumnus and former Holy Trinity and MCC head coach. Here's a look at information collected by FLORIDA TODAY via athletic directors at each school. Intrasquad scrimmages May 8 6 p.
