“Impressive” Chelsea caretaker has the chance to prove doubters wrong in extended spell in charge Chelsea fans are pretty uncertain about Calum McFarlane, their new caretaker – but there’s a lot of positive chatter out there. Chelsea fans are looking down their noses at the appointment of Calum McFarlane as their club’s caretaker – and can you blame them?

It’s reached the point where they have the right to doubt any decision made by their owners and sporting directors. It’s nothing personal against McFarlane – but if you’ve got a group of players who gave up on their last coach because they didn’t think he could cut it, what makes anyone think a guy who hasn’t even got the correct coaching badges (let alone a top level professional career) will change their minds? Nizaar Kinsella’s piece for the BBC looks at the new man’s history and tries to convince supporters he’s got something to offer.

McFarlane’s CV offers some hope – if you’re willing to squint hard enough McFarlane’s history is a really interesting one – including the story of how he ended up spending two years in Norway coaching at Tromso. It was after that he worked at the Kinetic Foundation, where the connections with people now at Chelsea began. But all the word from inside the club is how good he is – despite not having a UEFA Pro Licence: “Families and agents of academy players have told BBC Sport directly how impressive McFarlane had been in his role,” Kinsella writes.

Let’s hope that’s the case. He will have to be a true prodigy to get a result tomorrow. In other news… One thing the new man did handle very well was his first press conference back in the job, where he deftly avoided a host of awkward questions.

McFarlane also gave an injury update on some of Chelsea’s key attacking players who are racing to be fit for Sunday. DOWNLOAD THE OFFICIAL CHELSEA NEWS APP FOR ALL THE LATEST UPDATES – STRAIGHT TO YOUR PHONE! ON THE APP STORE Check out the latest edition of Simon Phillips’ SPTC podcast here:
