Helmut Marko recalls what stood out most about a young Max Verstappen
Photo by Peter Fox/Getty Images Helmut Marko has spoken about his early memories of Max Verstappen, pointing out that even as a teenager, the Dutchman’s drive was hard to ignore. Before Marko met Verstappen, the young driver had already made a name for himself in karting circles. His rapid rise through the ranks and his ability to outperform older, more experienced competitors had put him firmly on F1 teams’ radar.
While Mercedes and Toto Wolff were also showing interest, Marko was able to move first by offering Verstappen an immediate spot with Toro Rosso (now Racing Bulls), something no other team could match at the time. Reflecting on that decision and comparing his early impressions of both Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel, Marko recently shared some insight into what set them apart even back then. Helmut Marko recalls what stood out about Verstappen and Vettel early on In an interview with Die Zeit , Marko spoke about what made both drivers stand out to him even before they joined Red Bull’s programme.
For Vettel, who would go on to become Red Bull’s first world champion, it was his drive for perfection that caught Marko’s attention. “When Vettel sat opposite me at that table in my office back then, he had just won 18 out of 20 Formula BMW races. He was unhappy that he hadn’t won the other two as well,” Marko explained.
Marko added, “I remember that fierce determination. Verstappen gave the impression that the mind of a 25-year-old man was housed in his 15-year-old body. ” “Max had a clear goal, which was partly down to the extremely effective and tough training he received from his father.
” Helmut Marko reflects on Jos Verstappen’s training methods Bradley Scanes, who previously worked as Verstappen’s performance coach, has spoken before about how Jos Verstappen’s demanding approach helped sharpen Max’s racecraft and overall awareness on track. When asked whether he enjoyed the intense training, Marko said: “It was right on the limit,” and recalled a specific example from a karting circuit in Italy. “Here’s an example: near Milan, heading towards Lake Garda, there are two go-kart tracks; Max had to drive there until his fingers were blue.
