Ahead of PSG, it is rest vs. rust — should Manuel Neuer or Jonas Urbig start vs. Mainz 05?

FC Bayern has two good option in goal vs. Mainz.

Mönchengladbach, Germany - October 25: goalkeeper Manuel Neuer of FC Bayern Muenchen and goalkeeper Jonas Urbig of FC Bayern Muenchen celebrate after winning the Bundesliga match between Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Bayern München at Stadion im Borussia-Park on October 25, 2025 in Mönchengladbach, Germany. On one hand, Neuer is the established leader and still one of the best big-game goalkeepers in the world. With a massive clash against Paris Saint-Germain looming, the instinct is to wrap him in bubble wrap and avoid any unnecessary risk. At his age and with his injury history, even a routine Bundesliga match carries some level of danger.

On the other hand, rhythm matters — especially for a goalkeeper. Neuer thrives on timing, positioning, and command of his back line, and those things can dull without consistent minutes. Sitting him entirely could introduce just enough rust to matter in a high-stakes European tie.

That is where Urbig enters the conversation. Giving the young keeper a start against Mainz could preserve Neuer while also rewarding Urbig’s development. However, it is not without trade-offs.
