ATU alumnus and former catcher Steve Walker establishes an endowed fund supporting baseball scholarships, field maintenance and equipment.
For Arkansas Tech University alumnus Steve Walker, baseball has always been more than a game. It’s a legacy. Walker, a former catcher for the Wonder Boys, has created the Steve G.
Walker Endowed Baseball Scholarship and Fund through the ATU Foundation . The gift will provide scholarships for student-athletes in the university’s baseball program, as well as support for field maintenance and equipment. “I would have to say it goes back to my dad (Eulis Walker),” Walker said.
“He was a big baseball fan, and he coached me from the time I was 6 years old up through American Legion. He loved it so much, and that rubbed off on me a little bit. ” A graduate of Ozark High School, Walker enrolled at Arkansas Tech in 1971 alongside several friends.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation and parks administration and played catcher for the Wonder Boys from 1972 to 75. While the team struggled during his playing days, Walker said the experience left a lasting impression. “We weren’t very good,” he said.
