The Penn Relays are under way at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with a full slate of girls and women's events scheduled for Thursday at the high school, college, and master's levels of competition.
Two Jamaican teams got the day started with back-to-back wins in the 4X800 relays as Sydney Pagon STEM edged out yet another Jamaican quartet from Edwin Allen in the opening race with a time of 9:01:33. Alphansus Davis of Jamaica then held off South Lakes of Virginia in the second relay, clocking in at 9:08:30. Next up are the girls 4X100 heats with a total of seven preliminary races scheduled.
This year marks the 130th running of the Penn Relays, an event that dates back to April 21, 1895. It's the oldest track and field competition staged in the United States with more than 15,000 athletes competing annually and at least 100,000 spectators regularly attending across the event's three days. The high school portion of the Penn Relays will feature the girls relay events on Thursday before the boys events take center stage on Friday.
