One of the best golfers in Iowa's history is coming home. On Thursday, April 23, the Principal Charity Classic announced that Cedar Rapids native Zach Johnson will compete in the 2026 tournament from June 10-14 at Wakonda Club in Des Moines. Johnson is widely regarded as the most accomplished golfer from the Hawkeye State, having won two major championships, the 2007 Masters and the British Open in 2015.

In total, Johnson has won 12 PGA TOUR events and has been a part of Team USA in five Ryder Cups, including being the captain of the 2023 Ryder Cup team. โ€œItโ€™s always special to come back and play in Iowa,โ€ Johnson said in a release announcing the news. โ€œThe support Iโ€™ve received throughout my career from people across the state means a great deal to me, and Iโ€™m looking forward to competing at Wakonda Club and being part of an event that creates sucha positive impact in the state of Iowa.

" Since Johnson joined the PGA TOUR Champions, the senior golf tour for competitors 50 and older, he has been a force. After turning 50 in February, he has already posted one victory on the tour at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational in March. The win came in his debut event on the tour.

โ€œZach is someone Iowa golf fans have followed and supported throughout his entire career, said Alex McCarty, Tournament Director of the Principal Charity Classic, in a release. โ€œHaving him compete at Wakonda Club is a special moment for our fans and a reflection of the strong connection between this event and the communities we serve. โ€ This article originally appeared on Des Moines Register: Iowa native Zach Johnson to compete at 2026 Principal Charity Classic
