They are set to compete at Goodwood Racecourse in West Sussex as part of the 2026 Markel Magnolia Cup. Organisers say the new jockeys - representing a "wide range of backgrounds" - have had to undergo months of dedicated training, assessments and rigorous jockey fitness tests to prepare for race day.

TV presenter and dressage rider Gemma Owen, and veterinary technology worker Ilona Wells, who overcame a hip replacement and double mastectomy, are among the 12 amateur jockeys taking part. They will be joined by a reconstructive microsurgeon, businesswomen, media personalities, and several international competitors. 'Lasting change' The race down Goodwood's famous home straight will take place on 30 July during the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

It has raised more than £3. 5m for children and female-focused charities since its launch in 2011. This year's race will raise money for Education Above All Foundation, an NGO which aims to help children and young people affected by poverty, conflict and disaster through education and employment.

The Duke of Richmond called the Markel Magnolia Cup a "powerful force for real and lasting change" in championing women while raising vital funds for charity. "We wish this year's riders all the best," he said. Follow BBC Sussex on Facebook , X , and Instagram .
