Gilbert was the recipient of a scary and unusual moment that resulted in him "catching" a hard-hit line drive

SEATTLE โ€” The Seattle Mariners ย salvaged the final game of a six-game homestand with a 5-4 win against the Athletics on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park. With the win, the Mariners finished their six-game homestand 3-3 and finished with a 7-6 record in their streak of 13 consecutive games without a day off. However, the game didn't come without its share of drama.

For one, the game came down to the final inningย โ€” which ended via a walk-off RBI single from first baseman Josh Naylor. Seattle starting pitcher Logan Gilbert went four innings in his outing against the A's. Impressively, Gilbert finished his outing despite a scary moment in the top of the first inning.

Athletics right fielder Carlos Cortes hit a 107. 8-mph comebacker at Gilbert. The ball went into Gilbert's jersey, which resulted in brief confusion from the players, umpires and fans.

"I thought it was in (Gilbert's) glove and he didn't know he caught it," Naylor said in a postgame interview Wednesday. "And he was looking around trying to find the ball. It was hit so hard that I think he thought it may have hit his glove and bobbled somewhere else and (he) couldn't find it.
