Purdue men's basketball taking foreign summer trip thanks to NCAA rule change
The Boilermakers previounsly would not have been allowed to take another summer foreign trip until next year. The NCAA recently changed that rule.
WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue men’s basketball plans to take advantage of an NCAA rule change and play on foreign soil this summer. Unlike some past excursions, this one will not take the Boilermakers all that far from home. Purdue is finalizing details for a series of games in the Vancouver, Canada, area in late July, IndyStar has learned.
The team would play around four games against Canadian university teams over an 8-to-9 day period, along with some non-basketball team activities. Teams previously were limited to only one foreign summer event every four years. The NCAA’s Division I Cabinet, on the recommendation of the men’s and women’s basketball oversight committees, recently removed that restriction.
Teams can now play outside United States borders every year. Purdue’s last foreign tour came in August 2023, playing four games in Germany, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic. It represented the United States at the World University Games in Taipei in August 2017, reaching the championship game.
Purdue also played a single game in Toronto in Dec. 2023 against Alabama. That game provided a chance for star center Zach Edey to play in his home country.
