Yankees’ Aaron Boone weighs in on Mets’ losing streak, Carlos Mendoza

BOSTON — With the Mets not winning for two weeks and manager Carlos Mendoza on the hot seat, he’s received a supportive phone call from his close friend/old Yankees boss. “Yeah,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said before Tuesday night’s 4-0 win over the Red Sox. “Mendy and I keep in contact with one another.
I’ve talked to him this week. ” What was said? “That’s between he and I,” said Boone, who had Mendoza on his coaching staff from 2018-23, his first six seasons as Yankees manager.
The Mets’ loss to the Twins on Tuesday night at Citi Field stretched their losing streak to 12 games, their longest since 2002. Also, the Mets’ major-league worst record dropped to 7-16. Boone was asked if he feels for Mendoza, who have been in a rut with superstar left fielder Juan Soto on the injured list with a calf strain.
“He’s somebody that I think is really good at what he does and a great person,” Boone said, “and certainly we can relate to one another when you go through something like that. ” In 2023, Boone and Mendoza’s last season together, the Yankees fell out of playoff contention in August when they lost nine in a row, the franchise’s longest losing streak since 1982. Mendoza succeeded Buck Showalter in the Mets dugout in 2024 and was NL manager of the Year as a rookie manager, but his club lost 14 of its final 21 last season to go from having a four-game lead for a wild card spot to missing the playoffs.
