Yankees Great Could Soon Get MLB Head Coach Job

Rob Thomson of the Philadelphia Phillies finds himself on the hot seat, something that the organization will have to make a decision on. At 8-14 at the time of writing this, the Phillies have been one of the worst teams in baseball to start the season and have been brutal over their last 10 games with a 2-8 record. Simply put, if the Phillies are hoping to be the team they were expected to be entering the year, there's just no excuse for what Thomson is doing.

It's impossible to blame all of these problems on one guy, but ultimately, this is the reality of the league, and players have to do what they need to do to keep their coaches on the staff. Regarding who could potentially replace Thomson, there aren't a ton of perfect options out there, but one recent one floated is Don Mattingly, a former New York Yankees legend. “The Phillies won 95 and 96 games the past two seasons with essentially the same cast.

Like the Mets, they are talented enough to snap out of it. If they don’t, they could replace Thomson with their first-year bench coach, Don Mattingly, who previously managed the Dodgers and Miami Marlins. It’s not known whether Mattingly would want the job.

His son Preston is the Phillies’ GM, creating a potentially awkward situation. Thomson’s staff includes other possible replacements, starting with third-base coach Dusty Wathan. “After Sunday night’s 4-2 loss to the Braves, the Phillies are 5-10 at Citizens Bank Park, where they had the best home record in the majors in each of the past two seasons.

Their schedule will not get any easier, with the next seven games coming on the road against the Chicago Cubs and Braves,” Ken Rosenthal wrote . The Yankees probably wouldn't want to see Mattingly go in and be the skipper of another team right now, as there's a chance they might want him to be their guy in the future. However, he would probably be willing to coach the Phillies now and not wait around for the Yankees job to possibly come open at some point if Aaron Boone doesn't do the job.
