The soccer great’s appearance conjures up memories of seeing the legendary Pele in 1975.

The pinkness only kept growing. First shirts, then shorts, socks, hats, even underwear. When he turned 8 and was baptized, he wore a pink suit and a pink tie.

His school picture is in pink. Sometimes he’ll alternate with a black shirt, but it always has pink trim, and occasionally he’ll wear a shirt with vertical blue and white stripes, which is pretty much the only thing he’ll put on that doesn’t have any pink. We’re talking about my grandson Gil, who just turned 9.

The pink infatuation started right after soccer star Lionel Messi signed a contract with Inter Miami of Major League Soccer in the summer of 2023. Six months earlier, Messi and Argentina had won the World Cup, wearing the aforementioned blue-and-white striped jerseys of the national team. Then David Beckham talked Messi into coming to America and playing for Miami, which wears pink and black uniforms.
