Who is Porter Martone, the Flyers rookie lighting up the Stanley Cup Playoffs?
Porter Martone has become a sensation quickly for the Flyers.
The Philadelphia Flyers likely aren't in a playoff spot if the team didn't add rookie Porter Martone to the team in late March. The Flyers have had quite the turnaround this season, going from having incredibly low odds at making the playoffs at all to stunning the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first game of their first round playoff series. A big reason for Philadelphia's recent hot run has come off the stick of Martone, who for most of the season was playing hockey with Michigan State.
The Flyers drafted Martone No. 6 overall in the 2025 NHL Draft and he wasn't expected to make the team out of training camp, instead he went to college with Michigan State for his age 19 season. At Michigan State, Martone posted 25 goals and 50 points in 35 games for the Spartans.
However, Michigan State ended up bowing out of the NCAA hockey tournament to Wisconsin in the regional final in overtime. After Michigan State's departure from the tournament, the Flyers swooped in to sign the rookie to his three-year, entry level contract on March 29 to begin playing hockey with the team. Martone played in nine regular season games for the Flyers down the stretch, scoring four goals and 10 points to be an above point per game player in just a handful of professional games played.
It's safe to say the Flyers rookie was instrumental in the team clinching a playoff spot and starting their postseason journey on quite the run. MARTY PARTY HARD. #PHIvsPIT | #IgniteTheOrange pic.
