'More has to be done to tackle racism' - Byfield
Walsall interim coach Darren Byfield wants more done to tackle racism in football as Myles Roberts alleges an abusive comment was aimed at him.
Walsall interim coach Darren Byfield has demanded more is done to tackle racism in football after goalkeeper Myles Roberts was allegedly the target of abuse. The Saddlers' League Two match at Barrow was halted during the first half after Roberts reported a comment to referee Scott Oldham and then pointed out the home supporter who he said had made it. Yet Byfield said that he was initially told by Oldham that the comment had not been racist.
"I'm disappointed with that," Byfield told BBC Radio WM. "The ref came over, I asked him what had been said, he said it was just a comment. I asked 'was it racial?
', he said no. "So then that looks like I'm not supporting Myles. "These things affect our players and it's not a good look.
These things need to be eradicated from the game. " The supporter was reportedly ejected from the ground soon after and fans were reminded of the club's zero tolerance policy to racism during a half-time announcement. But Byfield was upset at how he felt the incident was initially tackled.
